Section B Benefits

Section B Benefits in Atlantic Canada, the Guide

Reviewed by Michael Murphy, K.C., Senior Counsel · Updated

Section B benefits are the no-fault accident benefits inside every standard automobile policy in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, and optional coverage in Newfoundland and Labrador. They pay medical and rehabilitation costs and a weekly amount while you cannot work, whoever caused the crash, and they run alongside any claim against the driver at fault rather than replacing it. Physiotherapy, chiropractic care, prescriptions and travel to treatment are the everyday expenses they carry first. This guide states who pays, what the benefits cover, and the deadlines, one chapter per question. For unfamiliar wording, the legal glossary explains benefit terminology and policy limits alongside the other terms used in an insurance claim.

Who This Guide Is For

Anyone hurt in a crash in Atlantic Canada who has been handed claim forms by their own insurer, or has not been told the benefits exist. The firm opens Section B benefits on nearly every car accident file in the first week, and the steps are on what we can do for you.

What the Chapters Cover

The next chapter states who pays when more than one policy could answer. The four province chapters follow: New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador, where the coverage is optional rather than standard. Each chapter cites the regulation it rests on, starting from the standard policy wording approved under each province’s Insurance Act, on CanLII.
